Kenwood USA Corp. introduces the world’s smallest powered car audio subwoofer

Solving a vexing problem for car audio enthusiasts and installers, Kenwood USA Corp. introduced the world’s smallest powered car audio subwoofer with frequency response down to 40Hz.

Developed using wOOx loudspeaker technology to achieve deep low frequency response, low distortion and high output in an unusually small enclosure, the new KSC-WA62RC is designed for installation in a vehicle’s passenger compartment, rather than its trunk -- an important benefit to drivers of small or leased vehicles.

You no longer need to take-up a lot of room to get pounding bass, said Steve Berry, Kenwood’s national product manager for mobile electronics. The KSC-WA62RC subwoofer is a high fidelity speaker that packs a powerful low-end punch, and fits in places most subs can’t. Someone listening to this blindfolded will think it was an eight or ten inch subwoofer in a conventional sized enclosure.

According to Berry, the KSC-WA62RC uses a 5-1/2-inch woofer and 100-watt amplifier to drive the speaker. Unlike conventional subwoofers, which use bass reflex ports to achieve powerful, deep bass; wOOx technology incorporates the mechanical equivalent of a bass reflex port, known as a passive radiator.

The passive radiator fits into a small enclosure, yet has sufficient mass and linear travel to allow the speaker to reproduce clean bass down to 40Hz. Trying to create a compact ported enclosure with low-distortion and high output down to 40Hz using traditional methods would require a port tube so long it would extend far outside of the speaker enclosure.

Berry said the speaker also relies on a built-in Dynamic Control Amplifier which increases power in the low frequencies to compensate for the human ear, which perceives bass frequencies at lower volume than high range sounds. The included wired remote control has four selectable crossover frequencies according to user preference, and a level control for easy adjustment from the driver’s seat.

Specifically designed for installation inside a vehicle’s passenger compartment, the KSC-WA62RC comes with its own mounting bracket and can be installed under the seat, behind the seat, or in a hatchback area. Its 'Plug-‘n-Play' design is ideal for leased vehicles, allowing for easy installation and removal.
