Kenwood introduced new Typhoon Car Audio Subwoofers |

June 25, 2004 By: Jared Holmes Kenwood introduced new Typhoon Car Audio SubwoofersContinuing its tradition of developing powerful, high performance subwoofers for car audio enthusiasts, Kenwood introduced two new W-Series speakers, the 10-inch Kenwood KFC-W2509, and the 12-inch Kenwood KFC-W3009, here today at the Consumer Electronics Show. New for 2004, each subwoofer incorporates Kenwood’s innovative, contoured 'Typhoon' cone design providing an extra-rigid parabolic-shaped woofer for higher power handling and lower distortion. Other improvements in materials and construction yield durable subwoofers with more bass SPL, faster high frequency roll-off and lower distortion. You might say Kenwood’s new Typhoon woofers grew from a perfect storm of design, materials, and craftsmanship, said Rick Noetzli, Kenwood’s product manager for car electronics. These are reliable, great-sounding, and affordable subwoofers that will appeal to any car audio enthusiast. Drawing on Kenwood’s previous 'Tornado' cone design, its first with a contoured cone, the new W-Series Typhoon subwoofers employ one-piece cones with larger, more pronounced contours that overlap one another, making the cone stronger and more rigid, ideal qualities for a low-frequency speaker. The Typhoon subwoofer also has a hi-roll, one-piece rubber surround and a redesigned gasket for a better woofer-to-gasket seal, increasing speaker strength and reducing unwanted vibration. Additional improvements include extended pole pieces, which provide symmetrical cone movement, and dual magnets, which increases power handling. The new KFC-W2509 is rated 700 watts and the KFC-3009 at 800 watts; both models have increased power handling by 100 watts over the previous year’s comparable models. Cosmetic enhancements that make the Typhoon stand out from any vantage point include a 'Kenwood Red' aluminum center dust cap on the cone and a handsome brushed aluminum ID badge over the back. The subwoofers are made for installation in sealed or ported enclosures or in free air mounts.
